Colouring

When it comes to colorants we chose to use Responsibly Mined Mica colorants and Lake Dyes.

The Mica that we use has been responsibly and ethically mined and is also at a Cosmetic Standard.
Mica's are a very controversial topic as they are naturally occurring minerals that are generally found in areas of extreme poverty, and therefore are generally mined in illegal mines by child labor. As much as this is sadly the case for some mica mines, it is not the only way that mica is harvested. There are plenty of Mica mines that are not supporting of child labor and are run above board and legally.

Mica, if you weren't previously aware, is a mineral that is mined from the earth, it is naturally occurring and is found in various places around the world. Natural mica is ground down into a fine powder and then is used in a wide range of cosmetics and industrial products.

Here at River Elegance Skincare we DO NOT support child labor or illegal mining resources.
Our suppliers have been vetted and are ethical suppliers.

The Dyes that we have sourced for use in our products are FDC approved (Food, Drug and Cosmetic Safe).

The dyes that we chose to use in our products are called Lake Dyes, they are generally used in skincare and bath products. A lake dye, or lake pigment is a synthetic organic colorant, it is generally made by precipitating a dye with an inert binder, usually metallic salt.

The FDA classifies lake dyes are not eye safe, this is primarily because of the potential for temporary staining rather than any toxicological concerns.

Polysorbate 80 -

This product is used when we are using colorants as without it once the product touches the water, the color sits on top of the water and stains the body and bathtub surface. Unfortunately we did learn this from personal experience when we testing non polysorbate 80 bath bombs, as much as i did think that our purple mica suited my skin complexion, we decided at that point that nobody really wanted to get into the shower to scrub off colorants after a relaxing bath ( and then scrub the bathtub to restore its beauty! NOT relaxing at all!)

We are doing our own research into using colored clay's in our products and how it may benefit you. We make no claim to our colorants having any skin or hair benefits, they are simply aesthetically pleasing.
